Polestar launches ChargePoint application: making changes to its EV charging easy

According to foreign media reports, Polestar has released a new ChargePoint app for Polestar 2, which makes it easier for drivers to find a way to charge electric vehicles on the dashboard by cooperating with the EV charger network. The new ChargePoint application runs on Polestar 2’s Android Automotive OS infotainment system, and will be released through the Google Play Store on the touch screen of the electric car, including not only positioning the charger but also paying.

To be fair, with the exception of Tesla, the experience of charging electric cars on the road may not be impressive. Tesla may have established its own network of super charging stations, while other automakers have to rely on third-party networks. Due to the different charging standards, charging speeds and payment providers involved, this may be a more headache for electric car drivers.

Although Polestar, supported by Geely and Volvo, has not established its own charger network, its goal is to make better use of existing chargers. The cooperation with ChargePoint is based on the latest application, which will run on the car rather than on the phone alone. Through integration with the navigation system, it will allow drivers to find the charger and add it to their route. In addition, they can also start the charging link above and make payments when necessary.

ChargePoint said the company has more than 100,000 charging points in North America and has signed roaming agreements with other networks to fill the gaps. Nevertheless, not every charger is the same. The Level 2 charging mode is relatively slow, while the DC fast charging mode is much faster. This is another obstacle that is difficult for novices to understand.

Polestar recently launched a firmware update for Polestar 2 that can improve the charging performance of the car on the DC fast charging charger. Increase the maximum charging limit from 150kW to 155kW and refine the charging configuration to reach the maximum support rate faster and be maintained for a longer period of time. The ChargePoint app will display the type of charger, the charging price, and the current status. Click the navigation button to automatically hand over the location to Google Maps, which can also be run on the EV’s dashboard. The Polestar app can also display real-time charging status.

At the same time, Polestar will also provide ChargePoint Home Flex family chargers in the Polestar 2 online ordering process. It is reported that the charger can support up to 50 amperes of current. ChargePoint said that at this level, one hour of charging can bring the driver 37 miles of cruising range. The price of this product is US$699, but professional installation may be required to achieve maximum current usage.
